Allergies and Ayurveda - Seasonal Flu

Allergies and Ayurveda:

Conventional seasonal allergies can be a result of an adverse reaction to food, medicine, your surrounding environment and cosmetics. Often doctors recommend anti-allergy and antihistamines for immediate relief to seasonal allergies and avoid the allergens that cause the reactions.

It is said in Ayurveda that allergies originate from an imbalance of the doshas (bio-energetic principles) which are responsible for the function of our body and mind. Rather than treating the symptom, treating the origin is the key to achieving long term benefits and relief. It is also essential to boost internal immunity through a healthier diet, lifestyle, some common herbs and certain rejuvenating treatments.

Balancing the Doshas

Your primary dosha type can often predict which allergy symptoms will manifest, so it’s important to understand your dosha type as well as your current imbalances. Dosha types include Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each of us has a combination of these three doshas within us and can, therefore, experience imbalances in any of the doshas. Different types of allergy symptoms represent imbalances in different doshas. By noticing this, we can more specifically guide the treatment of relieving seasonal allergies.

Kapha Allergy Symptoms

The accumulation of the Kapha Dosha in spring can lead to congestion, a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. This dosha is made up of earth and water elements. It creates a heavy feeling and excessive music in the head and sinuses. Some other symptoms include sluggishness and tiredness.

To relieve this, you can try the traditional yogic nasal cleansing system known as Jalneti. This self-practice involves clearing the nasal passages with saltwater with a Neti Pot, which looks like a miniature teapot with an elongated spout. This helps to regulate pressure in the head and although it may seem not easy or uncomfortable at first, with a little practice it’s easy to do, and highly effective.

The use of pungent and bitter (astringent) herbs and spices to reduce Kapha, including ginger, cayenne, pepper, basil, cumin, cardamom, sage, turmeric, and cinnamon may also be effective methods for reducing symptoms. An easy remedy is drinking hot honey water or ginger lemon tea. The herb trikatu, which can be taken daily, is also a herb that is considered effective. In addition, treatment should be geared toward lightening the body in other ways, such as daily exercise and use of a dry sauna.

Pita Allergy Symptoms

The underlying source of allergy symptoms in summer is often an imbalance in the Pitta dosha. Pitta is governed by the elements of water and fire, and in the summer, excess heat can produce inflammation in the respiratory tract or skin. These symptoms include rash, headache, burning or red eyes, and inflammation in the sinuses and airway (sinusitis, bronchitis).

Ayurveda recommends ingesting cooling herbs, such as coriander and cilantro to pacify Pitta and the resulting allergy symptoms. In addition, herbs such as Guduchi, Amalaki, and Neem may be helpful. Ingestion of clarified butter, or ghee, as well as aloe, can calm the inflammatory reaction that is typical of Pitta imbalance. From a biochemical perspective, these herbs contain healthy anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support our immune system.

Vata Allergy Symptoms

When Vata is out of balance, the allergic symptoms one may face include headache, wheezing, sneezing, and generalized muscle aches. These are typically seen in the fall as the air generally becomes cold and dry. This is due to the accumulation of the lighter elements of space and air in the mind-body physiology. Other manifestations of this Vata imbalance include dry cough, restlessness, and dry eyes. It is important to stay hydrated and drink warm liquids, such as ginger tea with honey. To bring Vata back into balance, use calming herbs such as ashwagandha, which is also an immune modulator that calms the immune system’s response to allergens. Another useful tool in calming Vata is performing a self-massage or getting abhyanga treatment.

Natural Ways of Relieving Seasonal Allergies

One of the best ways to relieve seasonal allergies is to eat light, warm and cooked food. Warm, cooked vegetarian foods, made with a little bit of clarified butter (ghee) helps the body to bounce back. Eating warm, cooked foods gives the digestive fire a chance to rest. When the digestion is low (and hence the fire is low), it can’t access the nutrition stored in raw foods, and the poorly digested food creates toxins. When you know that your digestion is up to par (especially in summer), enjoy raw greens and salads.

Reduce or avoid dairy

To reduce the symptoms related to mucous and allow the body to get rid of the toxins naturally quickly, reducing or avoiding dairy is very effective.

Do gentle exercise and practice pranayama

Yoga poses along with the practice of pranayama, or breath techniques will help reduce most imbalances. These basic and easy practices can help not only on a physical level but also on a mental and spiritual level, bringing calmness and tranquillity into your life.

Herbal supplements and spices

To support the digestive fire use warming spices in cooking such as ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin seeds, coriander, garlic and black pepper.

When our Agni (fire) is restored we maintain the balance of our doshas and are hence less likely to experience ill health, such as seasonal allergies. Instead of seeing our environment as a threat, we can begin to calm the excitability of the immune system and, instead, experience our connection to the external world as nourishing. Ayurveda provides us with the tools required to experience this connection and move closer to our natural state of health and balance.

Drops of specially formulated rejuvenating herbal oils are applied to the nose and used to provide relief for sinus problem and congestion. These oil drops form a protective later on the nasal tissues and stop allergens from directly attaching themselves to nasal membranes.

Corona Virus and Ayurveda view

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a major problem for the whole world. Coronavirus Could Cost the Global Economy $2.7 Trillion. Here’s How. https://t.co/FkABoP26dp?amp=1blue and red coral reef

Quoting from Al Jazeera: More than 100,000 people (mostly in China) have been infected and more than 3290 people have died (3,015 deaths in China and 267 fatalities in other parts of the globe, most of them in Italy and Iran). At least 1,200 of the new infections are in Iran in just the past 24 hours, the country’s biggest jump since the outbreak began. Iran’s health ministry on Friday noted that 124 people have died.

In France, 200 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed overnight, while India and South Korea also reported an increase in the number of infections.

Additionally, the death toll in the United States from the coronavirus rose to 12 when King County in the state of Washington reported the latest death on Thursday.

There is no cure or vaccine available.
Prevention is the best approach to restrict its spreading.
WHO recommendation on Corona virus infection:
Protect yourself and others from getting sick
Wash your hands with soap frequently and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Maintain social distancing (1 mitre distance) from others. (Note: some infected people may not have any symptom and yet can infect others).
Australian Health Department says: “avoid close contact with others, such as touching”.
. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with uncleaned hands, fingers and objects.
. Practice respiratory hygiene.
Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately

. If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early.
. Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider.
. Protection measures for persons who are in or have recently visited (past 14 days) areas where COVID-19 is spreading
Follow the guidance outlined above,
Stay at home and seek medical help early if you develop fever, cough and difficulty breathing.
. Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who have coronavirus disease from spreading it to others. If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask as there is little evidence supporting the widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public. https://www.health.gov.au/resources/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-information-on-the-use-of-surgical-masks

AYURVEDA VIEW:
Signs & Symptoms
Corona virus affects both animals and human beings. It displays wide range of symptoms of respiratory to nervous system like common cold, pneumonia, and giddiness. It affects the respiratory system and makes it fail. In severe cases vital organs like heart, liver & brain functions could be affected.
It takes two to fourteen days for symptoms to appear after one is affected by Coronavirus. So what are typical signs and symptoms?
Respiratory system- Sore Throat, Cough, Headache, Breathlessness, Tiredness, Running Nose. Critical cases been detected as respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure.
Digestive system - Vomiting Diarrhoea with Abdomen Pain.
Muscular system - Fatigue, body ache.
Lymphatic or Immune system - Fever.
Nervous system - Coronavirus causes demyelination in central nervous system & impaired coordination of brain & body.

"We all know that strong immunity is necessary to fight any kind of foreign body or disease. Coronavirus primarily affects the lungs and the respiratory system.
Commonly used herbs to increase immunity:
Amalaki or amla (Emblica Officinalis), guduchi/glioy (Tinospora Cordifolia), neem (Azadirachta Indica), kutki (Picrorhiza Kurroa), tulsi (basil) are some of the Ayurvedic herbs that are helpful in building the immunity and preventing the infection.
In Ayurveda, good digestion or strong digestive fire plays a very important role in fighting diseases. Eat a piece of fresh ginger or drink ginger tea. Mint tea, cinnamon tea, and fennel tea are also good.
People should eat only well-cooked food, avoid spitting in public, and avoid close contact, the WHO said, adding that it is important for people to seek medical care at the earliest if they become sick.
According to Ayurveda, Corona virus disturbs equilibrium of Vata and Kapha dosha. Hence, it recommends Pitta vardhak (stimulating pitta until it balances Kapha & Vata dosha) diet and lifestyle. Food changes, as suggested below, can help to restore these functions back in the body.

a. Have Herb like Fenugreek. It absorbs abnormal kapha.
b. Add Spices in food for e.g. garlic, ginger, turmeric to stimulate taste & assimilation
c. Drink turmeric powder and milk.
d. Eat fruits like papaya oranges and lemons.
e. Avoid cold drinks, ice-creams and cold food.

Ayurveda Therapy:

Abhyanga - Oil massage all over body helps improve blood circulation and stimulates parasympathetic nervous system. The calming effect brings balance in metabolism.
Herbal steam - Herbal fomentations to detoxify fats and lighten body, increases digestive fire and thereafter metabolism.
Nasya - It cleans the nasal track and sinuses, developing immunity.
Niyama - To maintain personal conducts as per guidelines.
Shauch - Personal and environmental cleanliness to be maintained. Clean vegetables properly and drink boiled water.
Svadhyay- Be aware of the symptoms of disease, introspect and seek immediate medical help.

Diet - Eat Satvik and vegetarian food as much as possible. Scientists are still exploring the link between bat, snake and coronavirus, “The only thing that you need to take care of is that the meat has been hygienically cooked and should not be raw, which is the best way to prevent any disease transmitted through animal meat.”

Lifestyle- Stay stress free, in warm regions, walk regularly and sleep well.

Kampavata (Parkinson’s disease) Ayurvedic view

Kampavata (Parkinson’s disease) Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda the science of healing mainly focus on aim “swastasya swatha rakshanam athurasya vikara prashamana” the great words of ancient sages that could be simplified as prevention is better than cure. There is condition in which occurred pathology cannot be reversed but can be arrested from further progression and hence the person can be saved from its complication. Vata the prime factor of movement is the basic support for even other Dosha since it’s the only Dosha which could move and help other components to move if vata gets deranged all the other components will also get affected.
Parkinson’s is a motar system affecting disease, related to CNS (central nervous system). It is caused due to degeneration of pigmented neurons in zona compacta of substantia nigra resulting decrease of dopamine level in brain further leading to motar disfunction or in simple words its just the death of dopamine generating cells. Still the cause of death of cells are unknown. Here the person will be unable to control his movement since the dopamine is related to movement.

Ayurvedic view of Parkinson:
Ayurveda, we mainly give predominance to dosas (vata, pitta, kapha) and its equilibrium. In ayurvedic references Parkinson’s could be co-related to KAMPAVATA or VEPATHU which is caused by aggravated vata. In this condition, generalized involuntary movements of all parts of body / head only.
